Spain’s love for golf grows

Golf is a sport with a long history in Spain. The good climate that we have in our country during, practically, all year is a good inducement for all the golf lovers. Over the years, the number of golf enthusiasts and golf courses in Spain have increased. In the beginning this sport started in Spain as a way to respond to the demand of the foreign golf players who visited our country. Today we can see how more and more Spaniards are aiming to practice and enjoy this sporting activity.

The number of federal licenses have also increased after several years of downfall. Spain ended 2017 with 272,084 federated players, data that places our country sixth in the European Union with the largest number of licenses, according to the Royal Spanish Golf Federation (RFEG) data. In the last Spanish Open of Golf, which was held from 12th to 15th of April in Madrid, more than 50,000 tickets were sold. It’s a clear reflection of the growing interest that this sport arouses in Spanish society. The successes achieved by Spanish golfers such as Sergio García, John Rahm and Rafa Cabrera Bello also have contributed to the increase in the love of this sport.

Rahm has had the support of the public and has been a revolution in golf, managing to position the Spanish Open as the European Tour most followed in 2018.  According to KPMG data is estimated that 71% of tourists who visit our country are potential players. Among the preferred destinations to come to practice this sport is Andalusia and, especially, the Costa del Sol. A place where we are lucky to have a unique climate that allows us to enjoy playing golf outdoors during the whole year.
